The specific frequencies you choose to boost will vary from track to track, and especially from genre to genre. It’s common to apply a subtle boost on the high end using a gentle shelf, typically around 8 kHz or so. So be sure you don’t bring back any of that nasty sibilance — and be careful boosting between 3-6 kHz, as it often causes the vocal to sound shrill and harsh.
The United Nations recognizes 54 distinct nations on the African continent. Within each independent nation, there are dozens of unique languages and ethnic groups, each with their own cultural traditions and communities. The music and art cultures of the continent and diaspora consistently communicate profound humanity beyond the documentation of written language, which is why so many extended variations of African music — like jazz, blues, and hip-hop just to name a few — have proliferated and spread globally over the last century.
It has gone down in history as one of the most epic Super Bowl performances ever, and these halftime shows are already pretty epic in and of themselves. In 40 years, it had never rained at a Super Bowl, and Prince really brought the party with four absolutely perfect songs for the occasion, and, of course, the one. “Purple Rain” is later in the video, but the whole thing is a good watch.

“Perhaps the more important feedback was something that he did himself. He paid close attention to which aspects of a string of digits caused him problems. If he’d gotten the string wrong, he usually knew exactly why and which digits he had messed up on. Even if he got the string correct, he could report to me afterward which digits had given him trouble and which had been no problem. By recognizing where his weaknesses were, he could switch his focus appropriately and come up with new memorization techniques that would address those weaknesses.”
I’d say my biggest accomplishment was completing a two-week European tour through Italy and Austria with the modern jazz group PLS.trio, where I played some of the most challenging music I’ve ever played with some of the most talented, virtuosic players I’ve had the pleasure of sharing a stage with, but I could still hang and hold my own—even while playing to large crowds. I felt on top of the world at the end of that tour.
For example, the whole concept of “toplining” may still be foreign to most non-musicians, but if you’re a songwriter who frequents co-writing sessions, there’s no way you haven’t heard of it before. Likewise, the term “scratch vocal” might confuse some, but almost every singer or songwriting producer you meet will know that one intimately.
The same goes for creative lighting, like old lamps or customized Arduino-triggered LED lights. It looks cool, and it’s also handy in case one of the venues on your tour doesn’t have very interesting lighting options. Most venues will also let you hang a banner behind you while you play, which can really help people remember who you are without you reminding them after every song.
This was an offer I sent to someone who said they could bring 300 people. So if they weren’t exaggerating, they would get the full guarantee, but this way I also protected myself if they were misrepresenting themselves.

There’s no arguing with this point. It’s science. The dot-com boom geeks who wanted you to have all the world’s music for free were clever enough to deploy basic concepts in psychoacoustics, or the study of how the brain interprets sound, in the architecture of the MP3 format. A quick-and-dirty summary of the compression processes at play includes the use of minimum audition thresholds, and simulated masking and bit/sample-rate management via the Nyquist-Shannon Theorem to discard any sonic information that doesn’t contribute meaningfully to a human’s listening experience.
In Bach’s pre-Enlightenment time, understanding how and why he composed his music might lead contemporary composers to new and exciting areas. Learn more.
